Freckle is a consumer-focused business

Freckle is a consumer-focused business

Rebranded as Killi in 2020, this business allows users to monetize data they share online. With their mobile app, consumers control their personal data and sell it directly to brands and agencies, choosing what data to share with advertisers and earning money from it. This Canadian company sold part of its business units in 2020, and rebranded as Killi in order to focus all their efforts on this disruptive product. They are truly a leader in the data privacy space with over 100 million accounts registered in the U.S to date.

Accelerating the in-house development power

As the company grew since its founding in 2018, and with their IPO just around the corner, Freckle decided to look for engineering support to complement their in-house talent. The goal was to boost their development power to reliably develop new products and improve existing ones. They had worked with outsourcing companies from Eastern Europe, but decided to give Latin America a try due to our convenient time zone and emerging tech talent.

After reaching out to us, we kicked off our collaboration with a small project, something we usually propose to new clients to get to know each other and provide value as soon as possible. On the first project, our team worked on improving the performance of Freckle’s internal tool. The challenge was enhancing the platform’s response time, which negatively impacted the user experience. This tool managed user data in over 800K locations, and had become slow with time. A refresh was necessary.

In this short experience, we were able to showcase our quality and best practices as far as making development projects thrive. It was all the evidence Freckle needed before hiring us for a long-term engagement, and a successful one. Over time, we grew from a 2-dev team to 8 professionals contributing to Freckle’s in-house staff, all with different specializations.

Over the last year, our team was a key contributor in achieving many improvements to Freckle’s products:

  • a backend migration to boost the app’s performance with Django
  • many iterations of Killi, their React Native app where users share their data and manage their earnings
  • the development of Killi’s web app version
  • custom development of authentication features using Cognito AWS, push notifications with Firebase, and app analytics with AppsFlyer
  • integration with many survey platforms, providing advertisers with users’ answers, key data for their targeting strategies

Our engineering expertise accelerated the software development and helped Freckle deliver an impressive platform that connects with users and provides a stellar experience. In addition to the development power, we also provided team leadership and DevOps implementation for deploying their products around the world. Thanks to our experience working with Scrum, we also brought more agility and fluid communication to the team.

All of these positive contributions were key to Freckle’s expansion and growth, leading to their acquisition by a prominent U.S. marketing agency in 2020.
