It provides assistance to people both locally and nationally, with clinics and diagnosis centers in 8 cities. It is the most prominent health care institution in its state and we’ve proudly served as their tech partner for over six years.

In 2015, after over 50 years in business, AMSJ decided to incorporate digital solutions to their customer attention channels. Previously, patients could only schedule a medical appointment by phone or by visiting one of their clinics, which translated into long wait times. AMSJ envisioned an autonomous solution where users could submit requests and schedule consults online. For that, AMSJ came to us looking for a partner that possessed technical expertise and a fresh UI/UX perspective.

Building and launching the web platform to coordinate medical appointments was our first project together, and since then we’ve continued collaborating to make AMSJ patients and professionals' lives easier. Over time we have made countless improvements and added numerous functionalities to this platform, such as connecting the solution to their pharmacy services. We also developed a mobile application with the same functionalities, creating a hybrid platform to support users wherever they are.
Another important project was the development of a platform to book medical exams, from scheduling dates to making payments, and since the platforms are connected, patients are able to see their exam results. Both systems offer patients and professionals a simple, accessible experience to manage their medical needs.

Users access the application with their own login and password from a computer or mobile device

Payments for medication, medical studies or appointments can easily be done online

AMSJ professionals also access the platform to coordinate medical studies and check patient information

Users can generate reports and compare metrics over time, as well as assign roles and responsibilities.

Diving into the complex healthcare business
At the UX level, our goal since day 1 has been to provide a familiar feel and helpful experience to a diverse population of patients that should be able to access AMSJ services from all kinds of devices. Initially, we held a Discovery phase to understand AMSJ processes and how information flowed from both the staff and the patient perspective. Based on this input, our design team presented wireframes of the whole users flow to validate with the client and start creating the UI.
Another challenge has been integrating the AMSJ platform for exam coordination with external services, such as financial institutions, and also implementing a communication protocol called HL7, which is a set of international standards for the transfer of clinical and administrative data. Additionally, an interesting integration allows doctors to see patients’ information during the exams on their computers or on the screen used for the exam itself.

Understanding the complex system of a healthcare business has taken us out of our comfort zone. We’re continuously learning more about the industry and how it works in terms of pricing, protocols, services and more. The knowledge we’ve acquired over the last 6 years positions us as a core partner to AMSJ, since we've been able to combine our development skills with our experience working inside their industry.
The solution we have built for AMSJ has a fresh UX/UI which puts strong emphasis not only on the aesthetics of the project but also on ensuring a truly user-friendly experience for the end users and robust technology solutions; almost 20k people are active users, and around 2k medical appointments are scheduled through it every month. We recently added an e-commerce platform for users to get prescription medicine, which was a big milestone for the client.
