Turntide is a US-based company that reinvented the electric motor by creating an intelligent system to drive down energy consumption and operating costs. It's a private company with investors such as Jeff Bezos and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Their motors are used in a variety of sectors, such as agriculture, transportation, building management, etc. As of today, over 142 thousand kWh of energy has been saved thanks to Turntide motors.

Turntide motors are controlled electronically, which makes them more efficient and environment-friendly. Every building or vehicle using a Turntide motor has registered a more productive energy use while decreasing costs. Some of their clients have reported up to 80% in energy savings.

Optimizing data engineering, quality automation, and scrum implementation

The first Turntide area we started supporting was Insights & Analytics. They focus on internal data analysis, checking metrics, and generating insights. Octobot's Data Engineer team collects and prepares high-quality data that later feeds Machine Learning models and provides insight to Turnide’s teams. Identifying broken motors before anyone reports a problem is just one of the ways this information helps Turntide.

We’ve also joined another Turntide department with the goal of developing automated testing processes for their systems. This Product Quality team aims to build an automation framework to test the motors automatically using virtual motor simulators and physical motor controllers. In this project, we implement Specification By Example, a methodology that allows a more objective, specific software development process.

Full stack developers from Octobot also collaborated to improve Turntide's system for setting up motors and tracking their performance. Besides, they worked on their product migration from Angular to React in order to improve the user experience, modernize features, and solve issues that React can more easily tackle.

Also, our team helped Turntide in their digital transformation by coaching teams to build strong Scrum roots. We helped them scale by implementing elements of the SAFe framework to achieve more alignment between strategy and execution and sort challenges in a rapidly changing environment. As a result, we saw teams become more organized and empowered to make better decisions and, definitely, better software. We also contributed to their Jira management and provided different team members with training and coaching on agile methodologies and product focus.

Another big step of our partnership has been completing a big migration of data, and enabling Turntide to stop using a software that they were sourcing outside the organization to switch to a platform that is built for their organization and that fits their needs better. This approach not only involves addressing and rectifying any existing bugs but also conducting thorough Full Regression Tests to ensure the solution is high quality.

Our engineers are encouraged to propose and implement helpful practices, and collaborate with Turntide's team toward a common goal. Their expertise and empathy allow their voices to be heard, thus strengthening the growing camaraderie and teamwork.

Over 2022 and 2023, we have helped them build new features, optimize data visualization tools, and calculate better their motors life cycle and related metrics. Also, we helped them integrate with Salesforce, Netsuite, Slack, TT-App, and other important tools. Improvements in processes automation and, consequently, performance are other of the highlights of our work together.

We feel a connection to Turntide’s mission and are motivated by the idea of contributing to a better world. We envision more Octobot professionals joining Turntide's teams in the near future to support their mission.
